So many ways
by Steven Clotzman

Once in a while I sit and stare
I see her smile but she’s not there
So many ways to bring me up and let me down

It doesn’t take much to set me back
A simple regret from just one fact
So many ways to bring me up and let me down

They say God up in heaven will show mercy
For whatever that is worth to me
I just want a little company ‘til I leave town

I’m in no position to make demands
And your expectations aren’t so grand
So many ways to bring me up and let me down

I lost my job the other week
It gives me some time to drink and sleep
So many ways to bring me up and let me down

I dream of the girl to carry on
But it fades more and more with every dawn
So many ways to bring me up and let me down

Learning to live with what I need
Or finding my lost patience to read
Between the lines of all those deeds that still astound

You say it’s not just what we let go
But all that we do with what we know
So many ways to bring me up and let me down

The blessings of winter followed by spring
The sweetest of cries I’ll ever sing
So many ways to bring me up and let down

So life isn’t fair . . . and yeah, sometimes
The best you can hope for is that it rhymes
So many ways to bring me up and let me down

Last night I wrote her one last song
Called “Something so right that went so wrong”
. . . about all the things for which we long but can’t be found

Still, I guess for me it’s not all bad
I’m not really happy unless I’m sad
So many ways to bring me up . . .
So many ways to bring me up . . .
So many ways to bring me up and let me down
